Account Fees & Charges
When you work with an Investment Representative, you pay for his or her time and expertise, just as you would with your doctor, lawyer, accountant or any other professional. Having an Investment Representative work for you allows you to limit or avoid intangible costs, such as the value of the time you might have otherwise spent on investment research or the cost of errors you might have made on your own.
Here are a few of the basic fees you can expect to pay as part of a Personal Investment Service:
Sales Charge
A fee charged when shares are purchased (front-end) or redeemed (CDSC). Most of the sales charge is paid to the broker as sales commissions; a smaller portion is retained by the Mutual Fund company. Reinvested dividends and capital gains generally are not assessed a sales charge. These fees are set as a percentage of the amount you invest.
Back-End Loads
Back-end loads, also known as contingent deferred sales charges or redemption fees, are sales charges you don't pay until you redeem or cash in your investment (sell your shares back into the fund). Back-end loads are generally calculated on how long you keep your investment; the sooner you sell, the higher the fee might be.
Management Fees
Management Fees that cover the cost of paying the fund's investment advisor, who is the person or entity responsible for recommending which investments the fund should sell or buy. These fees can also be called investment advisory fees or account maintenance fees.
